When and where do you do your best thinking? In the bathroom? While running? Just before bed, or first thing in the morning? On the bus? Why do you think that is?
My best thinking is done around things with the letter ’C’.
Whenever, for example, I had to calculate some complicated maths problem, or compose a critique on themes of colonialism and civilisation in Conrad, it was necessary to commence the creation process by collecting a cache of critically crucial components before I commandeered the chair. Chief among the components for cleverness and clarity were coffee, chocolate, cake, Coke and cigarettes. Complex cogitation was carried by consumption of these comestibles and could only continue if there was a considerable collection.
Contemplating the cause for this compulsion, I conclude that it comes from a childlike commitment to confectionery, combined with a compelling conception culled from classic cinema that cigarettes are cool.
Compiling this consideration caused me to chomp a crunchie, chew a piece of carrot cake and and chug a Coke.
My compliments to all you companion composers out there.
